Cowboys BREAKING: Dallas Opens Trevon Diggs Contract Talks - Source; $81 Million CB?

The Dallas Cowboys face some tough decisions regarding the contract negotiations on star cornerback Trevon Diggs. But the conversation has begun, a source tells CowboysSI.com.

FRISCO - "Talking'' isn't "doing.'' But as the Dallas Cowboys face contract negotiations with several of their top stars, the ball got rolling on receiver CeeDee Lamb, as CowboysSI.com was first to report on April 16. And now the same can be said, per an NFL source, on talks with Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.

There is an arguable priority on Diggs, as he is heading into the final year of his rookie contract in 2023. In 2021, Diggs led all cornerbacks with 11 interceptions en route to a first-team All-Pro selection. The 24-year-old is considered one of the top players at his position and of course, wishes to be paid that way. He could end up getting franchise tagged in 2024, or the Cowboys could work preemptively here.

Will Dallas see eye-to-eye with the star cornerback, who might make his case to eclipse Green Bay Packers standout Jaire Alexander ($21 million annually) as the highest-paid player at the position? The only way to know that is for the conversation to be initiated.

The 2024 franchise tag at cornerback figures to be in the neighborhood of $20 million - meaning it can actually be more affordable, cap-wise, to create a long-term deal. Extensions for Lamb (which will raise his cap impact) and Dak Prescott (with the intention of lowering his cap impact) are planned. ... and are all doable this offseason, especially now that Dallas can start anew with more than $20 million in cap room.

PFF has a contract projection here of four years and $81 million ($20.25 million per year) with $57.5 million total guaranteed. Except for the going rate of $20 million APY, which seems inarguable, we don't know whether these talks will take the two parties there, or when that will happen.

Diggs, for his part, has made it clear he wants to be a "Cowboy for Life,'' recently saying, “Hopefully something gets figured out. I love Dallas. I love being here. We’ll see.”
