FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys faced a bit of NFL Draft scrutiny - what else is new? - as they used the first three rounds of the selection process to grab Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith at No. 26, Michigan tight end Luke Schoonmaker at No. 58 and Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown at No. 90 overall.

Three rounds. Three picks. Any problems?

“I’m still stuck on your (claim) that you don’t think our draft isn't very sexy,” coach Mike McCarthy said in a response to a reporter's assertion. “I think it’s sexy as hell!''

A glance at the "official'' chart of Dallas' "gets'' in this draft in a sense fortifies McCarthy's position, because in addition to the three players chosen, it also lists the three players Dallas used late-round picks to obtain via trade.

"We’ve got six good players here, Brandin Cooks, Stephon Gilmore and Johnathan Hankins (re-signed via free agency),'' the coach said, "and we can add to this, too.”

McCarthy and the Cowboys are fudging a bit here on Hankins, but he was acquired via another late-round pick and did get comfortable enough here at The Star to re-sign. But the way McCarthy chooses to paint the picture?

Yes, the acquisition of three established starters using a fifth-, a fifth- and a sixth-round pick, plus the hoped-for top-of-the-rotation contributions from Mazi ("Biggest Shoulders Ever!''), Schoonmaker ("I Care So Much!'') and maybe Overshown ("They Love My Effort!''), and that is "sexy'' enough. ... especially if owner Jerry Jones' vision comes true.

“I think the three players that we have chosen, they will play,” Jones said. “They’ll be actively playing. ... We ought to be able to find a spot for them here.''
