Cowboys QB Cooper Rush: Help Dak Prescott or Sign with Kellen Moore’s Chargers?

“I’ve never been a free agent before and we’ll see what’s happens. It’s uncharted territory we’ll get there when we get there.” - Cowboys QB Cooper Rush

FRISCO - Kellen Moore’s success in his new job as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers is obviously tied to budding superstar QB Justin Herbert.

But maybe we should tie Dallas Cowboys backup QB Cooper Rush into the equation as well.

Said coming free agent Rush: “I’ve never been a free agent before and we’ll see what’s happens. It’s uncharted territory we’ll get there when we get there.”

Actually, Rush has been a “street free agent” often. But a “coveted free agent” as NFL business opens in March?

That’s new.

Rush hits free agency after a fine stint as the caddie of Dak Prescott. Rush threw for 1,051 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions as a starter, going 4-1 in those games while Dak rehabbed from thumb surgery.

Amid speculation that Rush will be coveted as a starter - which we’re not sure we can envision - the Chargers are going to be in the market for a backup.

(It’s pointed out here that the 2022 Chargers backups are free.)

Moore’s top job is to make Herbert - who last year passed for 4,739 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions - even better.

Rush, a good bet to someday go into coaching, could help Kellen there.

Of course, if this is about being a backup and a helper, why must Rush leave The Star? The Cowboys would love to be able to afford to keep him as Dak’s sidekick … and with Coach Mike McCarthy installing a new Cowboys offense, Rush’s brainpower would be of value in Dallas.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is talking openly about drafting a QB, and is enamored with TCU’s Max Duggan. Oh, and Will Grier is still in the building.

But Rush is a headline-grabber for now, with a possible chance to cash in … and with a possible Cowboys vs. Chargers decision to make as well.
