FRISCO - Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci, who most recently starred in the XFL, impressed new Denver coach Sean Payton during a recent tryout and is signing with the Broncos.

DiNucci was among the veterans who was allowed to try out for the Broncos during this rookie mini-camp, and he obviously followed up on his good XFL season to get himself a more extended look and even a chance to make the team.

DiNucci is a former seventh-round pick of the Cowboys from the 2020 NFL Draft who did not fare well in his rare chances to help the team on the field following an injury to Dak Prescott.

He has one career start to his credit in which he completed 21 out of 40 passes for 180 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in what would be a 23-9 loss.

DiNucci largely served as a practice-squad backup before he was eventually waived by the Cowboys.

This year he was drafted by the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons and passed for 2,671 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

As he recently said on Twitter, “Football is fun. Playing again is fun. No reason not to smile. Onward & Upward!”

The Denver starting quarterback Russell Wilson is of course Russell Wilson. But DiNucci will now have a chance to compete with Jarrett Stidham for the Broncos' backup quarterback job, with Jarrett Guarantano listed as another reserve quarterback on the roster.

As the story goes, Ben’s time in Denver wasn’t perfect; he tossed an interception, which caused his new coach to quip - noting that the new Broncos owners are from the Walton family - that DiNucci could always get  hired for “a greeting job at Walmart.”
