FRISCO - To the delight of the Dallas Cowboys and the rest of the NFC East, the Washington Commanders cannot seem to figure out the position of quarterback.

And on Monday, the wheel-spinning continues …

Washington made its massive move last year by acquiring quarterback Carson Wentz and has now made a massive move by cutting him.

Wentz’s release over will free up massive space that the team can use on a guy like Daron Payne, a Pro Bowl defensive tackle. But it still represents a major goof in a wasted season.

One difference this year, beyond the budget uncertainty connected to owner Dan Snyder potentially selling the franchise in the coming weeks:

“When they move on from Carson Wentz, they will have a lot of flexibility,” Pro Football Focus salary cap analyst Brad Spielberger said.

The Commanders’ math on Wentz is not complex …

QB Wentz’ 2023 cap hit: $26.2 million (No. 1 on the Washington roster).

QB Wentz’ 2023 potential cap savings with a release? $26.2 million.

Neat and clean on the cap. More muddy when it comes to decisions made under boss Ron Rivera.

The final two years of Wentz’s contract included no guaranteed dollars if he’s released before a March 17 deadline. That fact made the idea of Washington eventually parting ways with Wentz by then a no-brainer.

Will the Eagles’ former first-round pick resurface? Probably. Will the Commanders add a veteran to compete with and push young Sam Howell? Probably,

But Wentz as a reclamation project surely is not on any NFL team’s front burner right now. And as far as the Dallas Cowboys are concerned? They surely hope the Commanders continue to mismanage the most important position in the sport of football.
