Cowboys 'Took My Heart!' Eric Scott Teary-Eyed As CB Drafted in Round 6

The Cowboys add a depth piece to a talented secondary with their selection of Eric Scott in the sixth round.

It has been a defense-heavy draft for the Dallas Cowboys and continues to be so as they drafted cornerback Eric Scott out of Southern Miss with pick No. 201 to start the sixth round. And Scott is showing he's passionate about the move.

"I've got tears running down my face,'' he said on a Saturday afternoon phone interview with DallasCowboys.com, recalling back to his 30 Visit at The Star. "The Cowboys took my heart.'

Scott joins a talented Cowboys secondary headlined by an elite corner duo in superstar Trevon Diggs and offseason acquisition Stephon GIlmore, who they brought over in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts.

In his three seasons at Southern Miss, Scott was productive both in coverage and coming downhill to stop the run. He recorded 78 total tackles and five interceptions, two of which he returned for a touchdown, with five passes defended as well.

"I was taught it's not a 50/50 ball,'' Scott said. "I was taught that we (defense) have the right to the ball, too.''

Having already selected Michigan defensive lineman Mazi Smith, Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and San Jose State defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko, the selection of Scott marks four out of the six picks so far for the Cowboys being used on defense.

Of course you can never have too much talent or depth in the secondary, and Dan Quinn gets another corner who isn't shy about getting dirty in the run game while flashing strong coverage skills as well to learn behind Diggs and Gilmore as a rookie.

The Cowboys will be on the clock once again with pick No. 212 later in the sixth round.
