Should Cowboys Jerry Jones ‘Hurry’ on New Contract Signings?

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says the team is in no rush to get extensions done before training camp

The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of work to do in regard to upcoming contract extensions.

Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Tony Pollard, Trevon Diggs, Terrence Steele and Micah Parsons are just a few of the players looking for an extension soon. All of these players are near the top of their respective positions, and the Cowboys may need to pay them accordingly.

While all those extensions may be looming over the Cowboys this offseason, the front office apparently isn’t going to be rushed. Owner Jerry Jones said on Monday that it is "not imperative" to get any deals done before training camp begins.

"It is not imperative for me to wrap anything up at any particular period of time," Jones said. "We've got it right now to where we'll go to camp and have our year based on where we are contractually."

Jones added that there is no set order for the extensions to take place. He specifically said that Prescott's extension is "not a prerequisite" for any others. That includes Pollard, who has until July 17 to sign a long-term extension with the club, or else he will play this season on the franchise tag and be free next spring.

Jones may not be in a rush to complete these extensions, but he's still working on them in the background. The Cowboys owner says he's still in touch with all the players eligible for extensions and striving towards getting deals done.

"I'm noodling around on contracts probably every day of my life and I've got a pencil or a piece of paper in front of me," Jones said. "So that's constant, we're constantly working on thoughts about how to give us the best value for our money, and in this particular case for the cap."

While extensions may not be imminent, it seems that Cowboys fans won't have to worry too much about their stars remaining in Dallas…. Because there is a big-picture salary-cap plan. But as COO Stephen Jones said in regard to negotiations, “It takes two to tango.”
