Cowboys Linked to Signing 'Dan Quinn Guy' Deion Jones; LB Needed?

The Dallas Cowboys linebacker core is, to some, a little thin and with Pro Bowl linebacker Deion Jones currently a free agent, there is a chance to solidify the room.

The Dallas Cowboys roster is stacked, and many observers have them in the Super Bowl conversation. But is there a hole at linebacker?

With Leighton Vander Esch, the quarterback of the defense, and Damone Clark listed as a potential starter (this is predicated on Micah Parsons playing more defensive end), after that, it xan be argued that it gets thin ... real thin.

Jabril Cox, DeMarvion Overshown, Malik Jefferson, and Devin Harper round out the unit. Maybe there are answers there ... but there are no certainties. So could Dallas, with over $20 million in cap space, look to add a veteran to help shore up its linebacker unit like Anthony Barr did last season?

Bleacher Report has floated an interesting idea of the Cowboys going after free-agent linebacker Deion Jones.

"With a focus on improving the run defense, Dallas would be wise to take a long look at linebacker Deion Jones," Bleacher Report writes.

"Jones - who previously played under defensive coordinator Dan Quinn with the Atlanta Falcons - is still a very sound all-around defender. He appeared in 11 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2022, finishing with 44 tackles, 2.5 sacks and an interception. He was credited with only four missed tackles last season, per Pro Football Reference.

"System familiarity could be a factor here. Jones knows what Quinn likes to do defensively, and he'd have an easier time than most joining the team just before training camp and finding a fit. Of course, it also helps that the 28-year-old is still a productive player."

Perhaps the most intriguing about Jones is that he might come on the cheap, as he could only manage 11 games (five starts) for the Browns last season. But he was still productive.

In five of his seven seasons, Jones has surpassed the 100 combined tackles mark, meaning once he gets his hands on a runner, it's over. For comparison, Vander Esch has only managed that feat once in his career thus far.

Having played under Quinn with the Falcons for five seasons, we get the sense that Quinn will know what Jones can bring to the table.

Jones could add some experience and depth to a Dallas defense Quinn said could 'level up' this season. It' not a "leveling up" type of move, but it might be worth a phone call, at least. ... maybe once Dallas finds out at training camp just how "thin'' - or not - the club is at linebacker.
