Best Coach & QB Duos: Cowboys Mike McCarthy & Dak Prescott Top 10?

Dallas Cowboys duo Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott enter their fourth year together, but where do they rank in the NFL's best head coach/quarterback duos?

The offseason is the perfect time to make lists of just about anything, and this latest one looks somewhat favorable to Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys.

Colin Cowherd has made a list of the Top 10 head coach/quarterback duos currently in the NFL, and there were some eyebrow-raisers in his list.

Surprisingly, Cowboys duo Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott came in at No.9.

"No. 9, I consider them to be both B to B+, but Dak Prescott and Mike McCarthy," Cowherd said on The Herd. "He's got a Super Bowl. Dak is more than sufficient as a franchise quarterback."

Ninth in a top-10 list isn't so bad, right? Well, if we delve a little deeper into Cowherd's list, perhaps Dak and "Big Mike" can feel slighted a touch.

At No. 1 were Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes; no questions here. But there are a couple of selections that are genuine beard-scratchers.

Cowherd's list includes Sean McVay/Matthew Stafford (No. 2), Sean Payton/Russell Wilson (No. 3), Doug Pederson/Trevor Lawrence (No. 4), Jim Harbaugh/Lamar Jackson (No. 5), Zac Taylor/Joe Burrow (No. 6), Nick Sirianni/Jalen Hurts (No. 7) and then Sean McDermott/Josh Allen at No. 8 with Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa coming in at No. 10. Let's dissect that.

We aren't sure what the criteria is for the list, but if it is based on the previous season, then McVay/Stafford and Payton/Wilson can't be above McCarthy and Prescott, right? (In Seattle, they're getting a good laugh at the Broncos tandem being ranked anywhere high at all.)

Stafford and McVay went 3-6 together last season, while the Denver Broncos and Wilson were unwatchable at times and finished with a 5-12 record.

Payton (one Super Bowl, a 152-89 career mark) and McCarthy (one Super Bowl, 155-97) have nearly an identical coaching record.

McCarthy and Prescott, for all the knocks on them as a coach and player, put up a 12-5 record. Only Mahomes/Reid (14-3 for the Chiefs) and Sirianni/Hurts (14-3 for the Eagles) had better records than Dak and McCarthy, while Taylor/Burrow (12-4 for the Bengals) and McDermott/Allen (13-3 for the Bills) can be put on the list as well.

Regarding Dallas' rivals, the Eagles, Cowherd stated, "We don't know if Sirianni is a good coach'' ... an entertaining but perplexing statement to make while then have him above McCarthy is odd.

While this list can be taken with a grain of salt, it is still interesting to see and gauge the feel of how McCarthy and Prescott are viewed in NFL media circles. ... though Cowboys Nation may find it less than comforting as this list seems more "grab-bag'' than "well-considered.''
