Cowboys 'Secret Sauce': Coach Mike McCarthy Reveals Key to New Dak Prescott Offense

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy will take over the play-calling this season and has revealed how his scheme will be easier for all involved.

PHOENIX - Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is the new sheriff in town ... now as more than just the head coach, as he is taking charge of play-calling next season.

And while there are complexities to implementing his West Coast Offense and while there are benefits to "position flex'' and versatility and a scheme that can deceive an opponent, McCarthy is looking to make it all "Dak Prescott-friendly" with a certain level of simplicity the offense for his other weapons as well.

But how?

"Football is an easy game, McCarthy told us here at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix. "If you want your guys to play fast, give them less responsibilities.".

"That's where the 'secret sauce' is in putting together a good offensive system.''

Ball distribution will be key in the Cowboys' offense next season. CeeDee Lamb had nearly double the amount of targets than the next best guy last year (156 compared to Dalton Schultz's 89). Changing that a bit is helped by acquiring via trade Houston Texans receiver Brandin Cooks, who still has the "juice" Dallas wanted. Add in Michael Gallup, who is looking to return to his 2019 form as he is now a year removed from his ACL injury, and include running back Tony Pollard, and there is some serious potential offensive firepower.

CowboysSI.com has already demonstrated how McCarthy's offense can help Prescott, and with this "secret sauce," maybe there is a simplicity to it all that helps everybody.

Simplicity, McCarthy told us, is about "the ability to have the variations to protect your core concepts and to make sure the ball is getting distributed to your perimeter players and making sure you're giving guys opportunities that fit their skill set. It makes it easier and cleaner for the quarterback."
