FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys have, for the better part of the last four decades, found a way to succeed at the position of kicker without paying for it.

But success has been hard to come by in the last few years, so maybe it's time to "buy success.''

The San Francisco 49ers standout kicker Robbie Gould has announced his decision to enter free agency ... and has suggested that after six seasons in San Francisco, he's searching for a new employer.

Did Brett Maher have a track record? Yes, but at the end of the 2022 season, Dallas lost faith in him.

Does Tristan Vizcaino, the new Cowboys under-contract kicker, have a track record? He's trying to build that.

But Gould has been doing this successful in the NFL now for 18 years. Barring the possibility of a drop off due to age - he's 40, but do kickers "lose it'' like that - his track record is all about reliability. ... and feistiness.

“I play pissed off,” Gould said following this year's Niners' playoff win over Dallas. “That’s who I am. I try to find something that upsets me. ... But I always try to find something during the week to drive me. And a Super Bowl ring is what I want. I’m missing that in my career.”

In his poorest NFL season, in 2019, he made just over 74 percent of his field-goal attempts - and again, that was his "bad'' year. He was 27-of-32 last season and he is eighth in NFL history with an 86.46 percent accuracy on field-goal attempts.

Maybe he wants to land close to Chicago, where the ex-Bears standout's family resides. Meanwhile ... Do the Cowboys want to chase a kicker who might get $5 million APY in his next contract?

The Cowboys will have a big group of kickers to choose from, assuming they go forward with their plan to have a kicking competition. Names including Mason Crosby, Matt Prater, Randy Bullock, Greg Joseph and Matt Gay are all about to become free agents?

Dallas, of course, would like to solve its kicker problem in a good, cheap way. But maybe it's time to pay for the makes.
