FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys' tight ends room is having some fun with its "Four Horsemen'' theme, but one of the Horsemen at this moment is not able to mount up.

Dallas rookie Luke Schoonmaker closed out OTAs last week by wearing a walking boot on his right foot, both during the Thursday workout here inside The Star and later at a team social event. The diagnosis is a case of plantar fasciitis - what the team says is a "minor inflammation'' in his foot. ... but that doesn't preclude this from being a "setback'' of a sort.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys re-launch at The Star with a mandatory minicamp. Will the second-round pick Schoonmaker be ready? It's likely that there will be a lid on his with participation, as was the case last week, when he simply caught balls on the sideline.

In OTAs a week ago, however, Schoonmaker - the Michigan tight end selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the No. 58 pick - did some work with Dak Prescott and the first-team. So the long-term projection here is that the 6-6, 250-pounder will eventually play a role in coach Mike McCarthy's offense.

But for now? Schoonmaker, who last year at Michigan had 35 catches, 418 yards, three touchdowns and 11.9 yards per catch, might have to observe as the other members of the "stable'' take their turns. That group, hoping to make up for Dalton Schultz‘s free agency departure to Houston, is led by Jake Ferguson, who this week reiterated the group's "Four Horsemen'' theme.

“Our tight end room right now is so close knit,” Ferguson said on Thursday, via DallasCowboys.com. “We go in there and laugh and joke, if we have time, and once it’s time to get down to business ... Big, big expectations from the (Four Horsemen) this year. I can’t give too much insight, but (we’re) coming.“

Second-year guys Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot, along with fourth tight end Sean McKeon, might be "coming.'' But for "Schoon''? His arrival might have to wait a while.
