Cowboys Signing RB Leonard Fournette a 'Best Fit' Over Ezekiel Elliott?

While the Cowboys drafted Deuce Vaughn, they are now listed as a potential landing spot for Leonard Fournette.

Throughout the pre-NFL Draft process the Dallas Cowboys, found themselves linked to the possibility of taking a running back, even as high as with their first-round pick at No. 26 overall.

While they did take a running back, though, they did not do so until the sixth round when they drafted Kansas State's Deuce Vaughn with pick No. 212 in the sixth round. But does the addition of Vaughn to complement Tony Pollard mean the Cowboys running back room is complete?

While Pollard and Vaughn make for an exciting duo, CBS Sports believes that Dallas is the best fit for former Super Bowl winning running back Leonard Fournette.

"In Dallas, Fournette could return to his Playoff Lenny form while complementing starter Tony Pollard and rookie Deuce Vaughn," CBS wrote. "Still just 28, Fournette would give the Cowboys an experienced runner who could help them break their 28-year Super Bowl drought."

Last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fournette appeared in 16 games, nine of which he started in. In those 16 games he rushed for 668 yards and three touchdowns, while serving as a threat in the passing game with 73 receptions for 523 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Fournette was also crucial in the Buccaneers' Super Bowl run as he rushed for 300 yards and three touchdowns in the playoffs while hauling in 18 receptions for 148 receiving yards and a touchdown through the air.

One can see the appeal to the idea of adding Fournette to the current Cowboys roster if the price is right. He'd give Dallas a reliable backup that is strong in the passing game and another running back with playoff experience. ... and he has the sort of size (at 6-foot, 230) that Pollard and Vaughn do not have. He would, in a sense, be the replacement for Ezekiel Elliott, who is now supposedly fielding "other offers'' following Dallas' release of him.

Is "Playoff Lenny'' also better than Ronald Jones and Malik Davis, who are also on the roster? Davis at 24 is an especially compelling case given the fact that the 2022 UDFA is well-regarded by the coaching staff and though 5-11 and 205, he does run with power.

Of course, this is all purely a hypothetical and the Cowboys may very well be content with the running back group led by Pollard ... and maybe accented Vaughn. If they do want to add a third back, though, we understand what Cowboys observers see in Fournette as an if-needed helper.
