Cowboys Rookie Deuce Vaughn: Third-Best RB in NFL Draft?

The Cowboys selected Deuce Vaughn in the sixth round, with former NFL running back Maurice Jones-Drew having him as the third best back in this year's draft class.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn in the sixth round of the NFL Draft amid a flood of warm emotion. Being the son of Chris, the assistant director of college scouting for the Cowboys, naturally, there is strong sentiment inside The Star for the pick ... and the secret audio is something special.

While some think the pick hints at nepotism, the Cowboys argument is to simply look at his college resume. Vaughn has rushed for 2,962 yards and 27 touchdowns in his last two seasons.

Former NFL running back Maurice Jones-Drew is the latest to sing the praises of Deuce. On a segment for NFL Network, Jones-Drew ranked the top five running backs out of this year's draft.

He had Vaughn at No. 3. The only two in front of him? Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs (No. 8 & No. 12 picks, respectively).

Said Jones-Drew: "For him to go to Dallas, I thought, was a perfect fit. He's able to mirror and match what they want to do in the running game. Get him out in space, get him behind the tackles. Signing him, with the injuries and not having Zeke (Ezekiel Elliott) right now, I think he's going to be a huge addition to the Cowboys."

All of this is high praise for Vaughn, and we tap the brakes on the idea of "a perfect fit.'' (Put simply: Wouldn't Bijan have been a "more perfect fit''?)

Entering the offseason with a full running back room that Vaughn will have to navigate (and one that Zeke might eventually re-join), the Cowboys will have some decisions to make regarding the eventual 53-man roster. Still, for Deuce, his college resume speaks for itself, and it now appears that others hold him in just as high regard as the Cowboys do.
