The Dallas Cowboys have been tied to Raheem MostertDalvin CookEzekiel Elliott and a myriad of other running backs over the last month to give relief to Tony Pollard ... why not add another?

The New England Patriots waived James Robinson on Monday, just months after signing the young running back to a two-year, $4 million deal. So, let the Robinson to Dallas rumors begin. They certainly already have on Twitter

What would it look like then, a Robinson pickup in Dallas? Well, it would be cheap. Considering the 24-year-old was set to earn just $2 million annually in New England, the Cowboys could get a steal.

Yes, CowboysSI.com has established that the team's plan is to get to camp and put on pads before making any big change. And there is a thought that they need a "power back,'' and at 5-9 and 219 pounds, Robinson isn't any more of that than some of the guys already on the roster. But ..

Robinson had 1,070 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns in his 2020 rookie campaign for Jacksonville after being undrafted out of Illinois State. He's rushed for 1,192 yards and 18 touchdowns in the three years since, playing for the Jaguars and Jets.

Much of his dropoff can be attributed to repeat ankle injuries, culminating in a torn Achilles in December of 2021. Robinson has consistently regressed since Year 1, and that's not promising.

But he's still there, a cheap option to add into Dallas' fold as a third-down back with legitimate experience. Past Pollard, the Cowboys have not made it clear whether Ronald Jones, Malik Davis, Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn or another ball-carrier will relieve Pollard. Among this group, only Jones has established much in his NFL career. Would another reclamation candidate in Robinson be one too many?

So the running back free agent pool will continue to draw attention as a legitimate topic this offseason. Between Ezekiel Elliott, Dalvin Cook, Kareem Hunt, Mike Davis and now Robinson all being available, there is no shortage of options. ... but some are more expensive than others. Robinson does not count on the "expensive'' ledger, making his a name worthy of discussion.
