Cowboys Trade for Bucs WR Mike Evans Proposed by NFL.com
FRISCO - It takes on an air of authority when it’s NFL.com suggesting a Dallas Cowboys trade, and maybe that assumption of gravitas is a mistake.
But there are some puzzle pieces that make the idea of chasing wide receiver Mike Evans a compelling one.
To wit …
-Dallas is definitely seeking an upgrade alongside CeeDee Lamb - and the Cowboys favor big-bodies wideouts.
-Tampa could be in rebuilding mode due to Tom Brady’s retirement and therefore stripping down while gathering picks.
-Evans is 29 and in the last year of his contract and in addition to maybe not being part of the rebuild, probably wants new money soon.
As mentioned by NFL.com’s Adam Rank, “Dak Prescott needs more juice out wide, and I imagine Evans - a Texas native who starred at Texas A&M - wouldn’t mind playing for the ‘Boys.”
Evans is currently scheduled to earn $24 million in 2023, thus making him the eighth-highest paid receiver in the league.
That’s a problem, except …
In addition to both Dallas and Evans (coming off of his ninth straight 1,000-yard season, an NFL record to start out a career) probably wanting to eventually working out a new contract, the cap hit to Dallas would reportedly be $14 million if the Cowboys traded for him.
Evans is not a speedster and his TD production is very much about peaks and valleys. But depending on the trade cost, he definitely fits the “add weapons” mindset being expressed by Cowboys players … and not just because NFL.com says so.
