'Good Spirits!' What's QB Trey Lance Mood After Cowboys Trade?

The Dallas Cowboys made a shocking trade for Niners quarterback Trey Lance on Friday, something that hit home with now former teammate and San Francisco starting quarterback Brock Purdy.

The Dallas Cowboys made a shocking trade for Niners quarterback and former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance on Friday, something that hit home with teammate and San Francisco starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Two opposite ends of the NFL spectrum have now ended up in polar opposite roles for opposing NFC rivals.

Regardless of the adversity Lance has had to face with being named the No. 3 quarterback in San Francisco to being traded right before the start of the season, Purdy said that the 23-year-old wasn’t feeling sorry for himself once he found out he had been traded.

"It's tough seeing one of your buddies leave, but at the same time we're excited that he's got a good opportunity ahead of him,” Purdy said. "He was in great spirits.”

Lance now becomes the QB3 in Dallas behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. While expectations of stardom seemed to weigh heavy on his shoulders with the Niners, he gets to reset with the Cowboys in a new role as a pupil.

Purdy said he and the Niners like the transition Lance is going into.

"Happy for him that he's able to go into a good situation," he said. "We all feel like it's a good fit."

Despite Purdy winning the staring job, he said that Lance helped "show him the ropes" to life in the NFL despite his own lack of experience. Lance will now flip that role as he begins to learn from Prescott, Rush and the rest of his new teammates, with Prescott saying the newcomer will be "welcomed'' even though the outgoing Will Grier - "I love that guy to death!'' Dak said - will be missed.

"Can't tell you how grateful I am for him and to have him in my life," Purdy said of Lance.

The Cowboys will visit the Niners in Week 5 on Sunday, Oct. 8 for a prime time matchup ... a chance for old buddies - and old rivals - to meet up.
