Cowboys 'Aren't Far Off' Eagles in Super Bowl Hunt - NFL Insider

The Cowboys have a talented roster and, for some are in the hunt for a Super Bowl next season, with former player Damien Woody suggesting Dallas isn't too far behind its NFC East rivals.

The Dallas Cowboys are in the hunt for that elusive Lombardi Trophy next season and, for many, have the means on both sides of the ball to finally put to bed their long-standing NFC Championship drought.

With veterans in Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore added along with draftees Mazi Smith and Luke Schoonmaker while retaining the majority of its roster, Dallas is one team to watch next season.

But can they challenge the so-called "runaway favorites'' for the NFC in the Philadelphia Eagles? Two-time Super Bowl champion Damien Woody thinks so.

“For me, when I look at the Dallas Cowboys, I see a team that is, quite honestly, not that far off from the Philadelphia Eagles,” Woody said on ESPN's First Take. “They’re going to have the elite defense, got weapons on offense, they traded for Brandin Cooks to add another playmaker outside of CeeDee Lamb."

On both sides of the ball, the Cowboys do indeed have playmakers and, we think, ones that can decide games.

This offseason has been a big one in terms of change off-field as Kellen Moore was "let go" as offensive coordinator, and now head coach Mike McCarthy is the team's new play-caller, something he did to great effect for 15 years in Green Bay.

However, there seems to be a narrative and question marks around whether McCarthy has "still got it" when it comes to calling plays, and for Woody, the Cowboys' new play-caller still has big question marks on him.

“The biggest question, in my opinion, when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys? The play-calling with Mike McCarthy," Woody said. "He hasn’t called plays since 2018, his last year with the Green Bay Packers.”

We find that doubt to be rather silly, frankly. As the Packers' signal-caller, McCarthy had the Green Bay offense as the No. 1 offense in 2011 and 2014 while also having them in the top five in scoring in seven seasons.

If that wasn't enough, McCarthy had seven double-digit winning seasons in Green Bay ... oh and he won a Super Bowl too. Put all of this together and Woody seems right. The Eagles are a powerhouse. But the Cowboys are genuine Super Bowl contenders as well.
