Cowboys Ex Ezekiel Elliott 'Grinding' To Signing; 'Ship Hasn't Sailed!' - Jerry Jones

“The ship hasn’t sailed there. We haven’t made a decision at all. As far as our interest in Zeke, nothing we did today changes that. I haven’t ruled out Zeke.” - Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on the idea of re-signing Ezekiel Elliott.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys just can't quite let go ... and maybe the results of this NFL Draft make that a bit more understandable.

Ezekiel Elliott was cut by the Dallas Cowboys more than a month ago but as he awaits his next NFL opportunity, his ties to the DFW community carry on, as most recently evidenced on Friday, when CowboysSI.com was present at the “Light It Up’' gala at the Hilton Anatole to help raise money for the Children’s Cancer Fund.

“I’m doing great," Elliott said, via the Dallas News. "Doing great."

In terms of his helping out bring joy to young pediatric cancer patients, Zeke should feel great. This event is co-chaired by Troy Aikman and by Dak Prescott, maybe Elliott's best friend. But Elliott himself was a drawing card, a magnet to the little kids who wanted to interact with him.

Now he needs an NFL team to be that attracted to him. And following this weekend's draft in which 5-5 Deuce Vaughn was the only addition to the running backs room - substantial though he may be despite his lack of size - Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about the idea of a Zeke return and said, “The ship hasn’t sailed there. We haven’t made a decision at all. As far as our interest in Zeke, nothing we did today changes that. I haven’t ruled out Zeke.”

Elliott, who was designated as a post-June 1 cut, meaning the Cowboys soon gain $10.9 million in cap room, continues to be a discussion item among teammates in regard to the idea that he might return to The Star.

“He’s my best friend,’’ Prescott said of the QB's wish that Elliott could be a Cowboy again. "He's just continuing to grind. He doesn't get too high or too low ... I am excited for where he’s going in his future.''

Our understanding is that the two-time NFL rushing champion Elliott has yet to be contacted by any NFL teams, though we did assume interest could accelerate after this week's NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the Cowboys seem to be having a tough time turning the page, with a $10 million commitment to Tony Pollard and continued discussion now about a Zeke reunion.
