Tony Pollard Destiny: Rank On List All-Time Great Cowboys RBs?

With the Cowboys handing Tony Pollard lead running back duties, where does he rank among Dallas rushers all time? And where might he eventual rank?

A new era awaits the Dallas Cowboys, one that will likely feature a lot more of running back Tony Pollard. But just how good - historically good? - is the team’s new lead rusher?

“Currently, Pollard ranks 13th — behind Julius Jones (3,484) and Felix Jones (2,728) – with 2,616 yards and 17 touchdowns,” Inside The Star wrote. With Pollard the expected starter for 2023, and barring injury, he should be able to move into the Top 10 this season.”

There are three different ways to approach this. One is where he ranks “statistically.”  (Pollard is “13th” behind Julius Jones and Felix Jones, but …)Two is where he ranks as a productive talent.

And three, for fun, is all about “TP’s” destiny.

Dallas has employed some pretty spectacular running backs, including Emmitt Smith, who holds the record for career NFL rushing yards. And the man who Pollard is replacing is no slouch.

Ezekiel Elliott was ranked third all-time on the same list, despite not experiencing the playoff success or Super Bowl wins that Smith did. As the article pointed out, Pollard’s position can only rise this season, with him expected to shoulder a heavier workload than the 49 percent of offensive snaps he handled last season.

Already a proven Pro Bowler, Pollard has the potential to do something Elliott never did during his time in Dallas and lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. The elusive rusher should be in store for a big season with a healthy offensive line and elite playmakers such as Brandin Cooks and CeeDee Lamb at wide receiver to prevent defenses from keying in on Pollard.

If Pollard wants to cement himself on Dallas’ Mount Rushmore of running backs - which would include the faces of Emmitt, Tony Dorsett, Elliott (?) and then candidates like Don Perkins, Calvin Hill, Herschel Walker, DeMarco Murray, Marion Barber, Daryl Johnston, Robert Newhouse and more - this season will be as good a chance as any for him to make a statement, thanks to the Cowboys’ loaded offense.
