Ezekiel Elliott 'Pivotal Role' in Signing with Cowboys, Predicts SI Report

A move to L.A. could reunite Elliott with former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. But an SI writer suggests a "pivotal'' Dallas reunion.

FRISCO - A great deal of time has now passed since the Dallas Cowboys released running back Ezekiel Elliott, as the three-time Pro-Bowl selection remains a free agent. Although the Cowboys haven't ruled out a reunion, it seems unlikely at this point. ...

Except in the eyes of Sports Illustrated‘s Conor Orr, who released his 100 NFL predictions heading into the 2023 season, with a projection of Elliott landing back with the Cowboys making it on the list. In fact, Orr thinks Zeke's value is such that the NFC East rivals of Dallas should sign him simply to block a return.

“There are seemingly not a great deal of other options for Dallas at this point, when you really look at it,” Orr writes. "If I were, say, the Giants or the Eagles, I would swallow the $3 million to $6 million or so it would take to get Elliott out of the hands of a rival, not because he’s that good, but because he could represent the difference between the bottom falling out in Dallas or not.”

We're not sure Dallas sees it quite that way. And obviously, to this point, nor do the Giants or the Eagles. But this is a player who still rushed for 876 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2022, so it's only a matter of time before some team comes knocking on his door, it's just a matter of which one. ... right?

One suggested landing spot for Elliott has been the Los Angeles Chargers, with a most obvious reason being that Elliott's old  offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is now there.

In theory, Elliott could pair well alongside Chargers running back Austin Ekeler. But using that same logic, Elliott could make for an excellent running mate alongside Tony Pollard in Dallas. ... right?

Elliott remaining a free agent this long is surprising to many. We wonder now if the wait lingers until a team has a training camp need. And we suppose until such a move proves otherwise, the idea of Zeke being "pivotal'' in Dallas is one worth entertaining.
