'I'm Doing All I Can!' Trey Lance On Helping Dallas Cowboys Prepare for San Francisco 49ers

SAN JOSE, Calif. - “I’m doing everything I can to help,'' said Dallas Cowboys third-string quarterback Trey Lance. "But ...''

And while the first part of that quote is fun, it is the second part of Lance's detailing of his game-plan contributions leading up to "Sunday Night Football'' and the Week 5 showdown against his former San Francisco 49ers team that is the most telling.

"But,'' Lance continued, "at the same time, these guys have done a lot of prep on the Niners with those big games the last two years, so they know a lot about the offense. I’m here now, so I’m doing everything I can to try to help.”

What is the reality of Lance's contributions following the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft's trade by the 49ers trade to the Cowboys in September?

Lance told CowboysSI.com that in his first week here, he very much leaned on starting QB Dak Prescott to pick up the Dallas terminology, playbook and even the footwork required by the Cowboys coaches.

But in recent weeks? His job is largely to help on the scout team during practice.

"That’s kind of the life of a backup quarterback in this league,'' Lance said. "I just do everything I can in the meeting room and after practice to do what I can to make up for those reps. But during practice, just doing my role and executing the scout team the best I can.”

Lance has enjoyed his move to Dallas, saying, “It’s been good for me to get a new look and a fresh start. It’s a breath of fresh air here. And he has quickly become a fan of the teachings of Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

“Schotty always has a checklist,” Lance said. “He wants to hit on stuff that we’ve talked about throughout the week that I didn’t have time to get reps on. A lot of different throws and a lot of different reps. It’s great for me and I’m thankful for him that he’s able to do that for me pregame. I get a great workout in, and I have his eyes on me the whole time.”

And now the eyes turn to the Cowboys at the 49ers, with silliness about "inside info'' and "code words'' and "secret-double agents'' being pushed to where they've always belonged ... the wayside.
