Jerry Jones Evaluates Coach Sean Payton vs. Mike McCarthy - Cowboys 'Genuineness'
FRISCO - Maybe eventually, Mike McCarthy's Dallas Cowboys will cease to be viewed through a Sean Payton-shaped prism.
But coach Payton is in the headlines by virtue of him landing with the Denver Broncos via a trade.
And coach Mike McCarthy is in the headlines by virtue of him ... well, being the coach of the Cowboys.
So microphones are placed before Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, and the questions come ... and off Jerry goes.
“I think the world of Sean,'' Jones said. "It’s well-known how much I respect him as a coach. They’ll make an effective team, (new Broncos) ownership and coach.”
Jones could have in theory hired Payton a year ago when the coach went into "retirement'' from the Saints. Jones could have in theory done it again this offseason. After all, critics spent all year speculating that a disappointing Cowboys season might result in the firing of McCarthy - indeed, the speculation continued even after Dallas finished 12-5 for the second straight year ... and even after a playoff victory at Tampa.
Jones may have wobbled a bit on McCarthy a year ago. But no more. The recent coaching staff moves (including the "mutual parting'' with coordinator Kellen Moore) and McCarthy's planned offensive overhaul speak to Jones' faith in his coach, who in so many ways actually has a resume that is identical to that of Payton, despite all of Payton's volume of praise.
And what does Jerry like most about his coach (who will along with the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer in truth serves as his own "coordinator'') and the coming changes?
“There are a lot of variations of who does what within the staff,'' Jones said. "But I'm confident that Mike can do anything and everything this team needs. The players ... follow Mike. He's a got a genuineness about him.”
