NFL Mock: Cowboys Draft Red Zone Threat TE in First Round

The Dallas Cowboys enter the NFL Draft in a unique position and in the latest NFL Mock Draft, CBS Sports has Dallas taking Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer.

The Dallas Cowboys tight end room lost Dalton Schultz via free agency, but with Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot, many think the position is in good hands.

But ...

Do the Cowboys want more "juice" from the tight end position? CBS Sports thinks so, and in their latest mock draft, Dallas takes Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer with the No.26 pick.

"Mike McCarthy wants to run the dang ball so why not help your offense out twice by grabbing a strong run-blocking tight end who doesn't need to be the focal point of the offense with a stout WR corps on the depth chart," CBS Sports writes.

It is an interesting choice going with a tight end. While both Hendershot and Ferguson only have one NFL season under their belts, adding another young tight end to the room with the blocking abilities neither rookie has is food for thought.

Mayers production for the Fighting Irish is nothing to sneeze at, either. In back-to-back seasons, Mayer has surpassed 800 receiving yards and has no less than seven receiving touchdowns in both years.

Given his size (6-4, 251), Mayer creates a mismatch virtually every time he gets downfield. Coupled with his excellent ball skills and contested catch ability, Mayer could be a Week 1 starter in Dallas.

The Notre Dame tight end could be a big addition to the Dallas run game as well due to his effort to block and his willingness to finish with force as coach Mike McCarthy looks to make that a staple of his new offense.

CBS Sports is one of many who think Dallas could take Mayer in the first round, as ESPN has a similar line of thinking.

While some think that offensive lineman Steve Aliva is a good route for Dallas to go down in the first round, the Mayer chatter isn't going away.

The Cowboys have a three-headed monster at the receiver position with CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup ... the tight end group, with the addition of Mayer, could be just as loaded.
