'Most Fun Ever!' Why Coach Mike McCarthy Feels New Cowboys Joy

Coach Mike McCarthy on overseeing Cowboys changes: “This is the most fun I’ve had in Dallas.”

Are we having fun yet?

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy says he is - more than ever as he enters his fourth season in DFW.

“This,'' McCarthy told reporters on Wednesday's media session at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, "is the most fun I’ve had in Dallas.”

Given that he's overseen back-to-back 12-5 playoff seasons, that is saying something. So what is the source of his newfound joy?

Teaching. Organizing. Freshness.

McCarthy is invigorated by the fact that he is overseeing a change to the West Coast Offense, which is very much in his wheelhouse - and that he gets to do it his way, complete with him exercising his right under the Jones ownership to serve as his own offensive play-caller.

He said the end result might be only a "30-percent'' change in the way Dallas - for the last two seasons among the NFL's best offense - does its business with QB Dak Prescott and company.

“We’re not looking at making wholesale changes,'' he said.

But in addition to the percentages, there is the teaching. McCarthy has been a part of educational two-a-days for his coaching staff, which also has a new look and feel.

“We all can use a new voice,'' McCarthy said when asked specifically about parting ways with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who is now with the Chargers. "We all can use a sense of motivation and challenge and so forth.

"This is a new challenge for (Dak - those are) his words. He’s excited about it.”

So are others who figure to be featured in the rebooted offense.

“I don’t know what to expect, but I’m very excited,” CeeDee Lamb said to Yahoo Sports at Radio Row at the Super Bowl. “You look at what (McCarthy's) done. He was calling a couple plays out in Green Bay. So it’s nothing new to him. He’s been in this position, and he knows what he’s doing.''

That doesn't mean the locker room is happy to see Moore go (to the Chargers). Indeed, Prescott said he is "upset but happy for him.''

But at the same time, Prescott is also a McCarthy supporter, saying often when asked about the coach job security, "I have his back.''

And what does McCarthy have?

Fun.
