Rumor: Dallas Cowboys Named Coach Bill Belichick 'Landing Spot' (But Why?)

FRISCO - It is becoming increasingly clear that the New England Patriots are examing ways to part with legendary head coach Bill Belichick following the conclusion of the 2023 regular season. ... if not sooner.

The Patriots' collapse now has them at an NFL-worst 2-8 on the year following Sunday's dreary 10-6 loss to the Colts in Germany, and the team's owner is not hiding his unhappiness.

“This is our 30th year that I’ve had the privilege of owning this team, and I’ve never been 2-7,” Kraft said before kickoff on Sunday morning. “So it’s really disappointing and I hoped that things would be a lot better ... This isn’t what we were expecting to happen this year.”

So, let the irresponsible speculation begin, with CBS Sports taking a stab, having named four NFL teams possible landing spots. And for reasons that should be obvious to you, Dear Reader, the "story'' features as a primo landing spot the Dallas Cowboys.

We preface this by saying that with all due respect to the author, who we're sure is a nice young fellow, has no insight into the Cowboys situation ... and we'll guess he has no insight into the Patriots situation, either.

Via CBS Sports: "The Cowboys already have a roster ready-made for a Super Bowl run ... One of the big concerns about this current team making a title run has been the coaching under Mike McCarthy. If he falls short of a deep playoff run once again, that could open the door for (owner Jerry) Jones to make the change.

"Belichick would come in, have instant credibility amongst the roster, and could very well solve the execution and mental mistakes this Cowboys team has been plagued with for recent seasons.''

Factually, there is at some point some threshold of success Jones will want his Cowboys to cross, and failing that - again, at some point - there might be a new coach in Dallas. But there is no "big concern'' about McCarthy inside The Star, where the Cowboys are 6-3 and prepping for a playoff march.

There also is no particular connection between Belichick and Jones, as we point out in the "five truths'' column above.

That makes this - along with CBS Sports naming Washington, Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Chargers as other possible landing spots - nothing more than a wild guess.
