Trey Lance Trade: Why’d 49ers Give Up on New Cowboys QB?

How could the 49ers give up on Trey Lance this soon? What do the Cowboys know that they don’t?

SAN ANTONIO - What a peculiar situation in San Francisco. Credit the Dallas Cowboys for staying diligent and taking advantage of the 49ers' decision to put 23-year-old QB Trey Lance on the trade block.

Could Lance really have been that bad? Has Sam Darnold improved that much? Are we certain Brock Purdy will repeat what he did in half a season before getting hurt?

Lance fits all the physical blanks when it comes to being a solid QB in the NFL and head coach Kyle Shanahan has lots of equity when it comes to evaluating and developing the position.

But ... How could they give up on Lance this soon? … Especially after giving Miami three first-round draft picks? It's not Lance's fault he's been hurt and when he has played other key guys like Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle haven't been available.

San Francisco has been a “spender” when it comes to draft capital; the Niners felt compelled to still trade for Christian McCaffrey (in another costly blockbuster) even after Purdy had taken over as starting QB.

On the one hand … what did Shanahan know in a positive way when they spent on Lance? And in a negative way, what was it Shanahan discovered to change that tide?

Lance has arrived at The Star, coach Mike McCarthy saying late Monday afternoon, "He's been here all day ... We'll all try to get as much time with him as we can.''

I have no idea how Dallas will get Lance involved - for now, he’s miles behind Dak Prescott - but part of me thinks the 49ers aren't done being judged.

The Cowboys can celebrate now the day they took a low-risk stab at a prospect. And the 49ers? They may rue the day yet that they gave up on the kid.
