Cowboys reflect on Andrew Luck retirement: 'More power to him,' says Dak Prescott

ARLINGTON - I caught up with Dak Prescott immediately after Saturday's 34-0 preseason win over the visiting Texans in part to establish just how quickly news travels. And yes, the Dallas Cowboys QB told me, he already knew all about Andrew Luck’s unexpected retirement from the NFL.

"Nobody understands another man’s decisions unless you live it,'' Dak told me. "Me? I get it. More power to him.''

That is the overriding sentiment from people who have actually played the game, who understand the demands, and who find it an impossible job to do if you don't really want to do it.

As Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, “To step back away from this thing, I honor him. I think a lot of his family, I think a lot of his father (former NFL QB Oliver Luck), I think a lot of what he’s brought to football and wish him nothing but the very best. I hope he becomes President of the United States.”

Leave it to Jerry to add a pinch of hyperbole but it's true that people in the NFL have great respect for Luck, age 29 ... for his talent, his toughness, and now, for this.

That doesn't mean everybody completely gets it -- including the good people of Indianapolis, many of whom responded to the news in a most unfortunate way -- and right in Luck's face ...

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett remained plugged into his team's efforts all night, so he was not fully aware of the retirement.

“It’s stunning to me,'' he said. "I did not hear that news. I’ve gotten an opportunity to know him through the years being at Pro Bowls together and I know his dad from way way back. He’s one of the great players and great people in the National Football League. That really surprises me. ... But, I hold him in the highest regard as a player and as a person and I wish him nothing but the best going forward.”

Later, Prescott took to the podium and fielded more Luck questions.

“He’s a helluva player, a helluva guy,'' Dak said. "I respect him so, so much, on the field, off the field. That’s his decision. Everybody is entitled to that. I don’t think it’s fair for any of us to make any opinions about what he has going on. I respect his decision. I wish him the best.”
