FRISCO - Can Jalen Carter really afford to be this choosy?

One of the most compelling storylines for the 2023 NFL Draft centers on Georgia defensive lineman Carter, who critics believe is adding to his troubles by limiting his pre-Draft visits.

Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says that the defensive lineman will only take visits with teams that are picking inside the top 10.

Rosenhaus has been at this a long time. He knows how to use the circumstances and the media to put his clients in a favorable light.

But this one, we don't get.

The Dallas Cowboys own a first-round pick but aren't scheduled to be on the clock until No. 26. ... and so using the Rosenhaus plan, Dallas will be robbed of a chance to learn more about the player ...

And the player will be robbed of the chance to show 32 teams that he is prepared to mature into a pro player.

So now teams must decide if Carter's numerous red flags are worth adding one of the most physically talented players in this draft class. ... and teams like the Cowboys that are outside the top 10 must decide that without a full filing cabinet of info.

Carter has reportedly taken visits to the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears, who pick at No. 10 and No. 9, respectively.

The character concerns about Carter are due in part to a car-racing incident in which a crash that left a Georgia teammate and a Georgia staff member dead.

Carter entered no contest plea to the charges on March 16. According to attorney Kim T. Stephens, Carter was sentenced to serve 12 months of probation, pay a $1,000 fine, perform 80 hours of community service and complete a state-approved defensive driving course.

It has been speculated that some of his recent problems are "psychological'' in nature due to the fatal crash - the sort of thing every potential employer would like to explore.

Carter was a consensus top-five pick earlier this offseason and currently has the sixth-best odds to be drafted No. 1 overall. Carter was a key part of Georgia’s stout defense that allowed the fewest rushing yards per game (77) in 2022. In the Bulldogs’ back-to-back championship run, Carter finished with 69 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, six sacks and two forced fumbles.

With Carter, the risk is there. The reward might be there. But the visits to all of the teams that might want to pay him millions of dollars? Those, foolishly, are not there.
