Cowboys WR Help: Cedrick Wilson Trade - Or Wait For Dolphins Cut?

Could the Cowboys trade for a previous piece of the offense that seemed to fit so well? Dolphins wideout Cedrick Wilson could help Dak Prescott and the Dallas offense in 2023.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys still seem to be in need of help at the wideout position, and that could very well be addressed later this month during the NFL Draft in Kansas City.

But why not bring back a previous piece of the offense that seemed to fit so well? The Miami Herald thinks that the Dolphins may be open to trading receiver Cedrick Wilson.

Wilson inked a three-year, $22 million deal with the Dolphins last offseason, in what appeared at the time to be somewhat of an insignificant loss for the Cowboys.

But Dallas also lost Amari Cooper via trade, and James Washington before the season ever started. Combine that with Michael Gallup's slow recovery from a torn ACL, and the Cowboys suffered from a lack of depth at wide receiver in all of 2022.

The signing of Wilson was before the Dolphins also went out and pulled off the blockbuster trade that sent Tyreek Hill from Kansas City to Miami. And that, combined with the play of others in front of him, has kept Wilson out of the lineup with the Dolphins.

Wilson played an important role with the Cowboys in 2021, catching 45 passes from 602 yards and six touchdowns. Most importantly, he displayed good chemistry with quarterback Dak Prescott.

To compare, Wilson caught just 12 balls last season with the Dolphins and was relegated to returning punts early in the season.

A pre-June 1 trade could save the Dolphins $6 million in cap space and a post-June 1 trade could save an additional $1 million.

Coach Mike McCarthy is now calling plays for the Cowboys, but Wilson knows the Dallas system. He's existing in mothballs in Miami. Our view?

Our Mike Fisher has written that Miami would trade the player to Dallas "for a case of Shiner,'' and that the Cowboys aren't taking on an unproductive player and paying him $7 million "just because he's missed'' by some at The Star.

Dolphins SI is putting it more politely, writing, "The Dolphins would love to be able to move his contract and likely would be willing to accept a very modest return in a trade.''

So if Dallas wants him? Wait on Miami general manager Chris Grier making the call to cut him, post-June 1, meaning the Dolphins can save $4 million ... and meaning the Cowboys can have him for free.
