Cowboys vs. Commanders: What's New Coach Eric Bieniemy Real Role in Rivalry?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys changed coordinators this offseason because head coach Mike McCarthy wants to install his West Coast Offense to take QB Dak Prescott to another level.

In a post-Kellen Moore time, there is clarity at The Star on that.

The Washington Commanders have also changed coordinators, having dismissed Scott Turner while hiring Eric Bieniemy from the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

And is there clarity there? Many are misunderstanding the decision. We’re here to help …

-Bienemy will be the new "assistant head coach'' here in addition to serving as the offensive coordinator.

-Bienemy will earns a significant amount more in pay from what he was getting in K.C. Anderson reports that he was "not making market-value'' with the Chiefs.

-With the Chiefs, he'd been working on one-year contracts; this is his first multi-year deal as an NFL coordinator.

-Bienemy, she says, "would not have accepted being just an offensive coordinator with the Commanders.

Additionally, of course, in Kansas City it's actually head coach Andy Reid's offense. So the new coordinator in Washington will have a great deal more authority.

Bieniemy, 53, has led the offense every year since Patrick Mahomes was named the starter and the unit has been in the top five since Bieniemy took over for Matt Nagy in 2018.

Bieniemy's contract with the Chiefs was expiring - yes, a one-year contract - and so this week he engaged in a series of interviews with the Commanders.

Bieniemy has frequently been considered a candidate to become an NFL head coach, and while that obviously still hasn't happened, his decision to join the Commanders - with success here - could open up opportunities in the future.

But for now? Rivera is a run-first guy; Bieniemy is much more than that … so a new install is coming. In that sense, McCarthy finds himself in a race of sorts.
