DeAndre Hopkins is now a free agent, and the Dallas Cowboys continue to be linked with the All-Pro receiver.

The Dallas Cowboys have a fridge stocked with receivers in CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and a healthy-looking Michael Gallup ... but still, rumors persist of Dallas being interested in free agent DeAndre Hopkins. (The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has stated it is "an option,'' though with no clarity as to which party it is an option for.) CowboysSI.com has meanwhile suggested that Dallas' "mindset'' is about not wanting to break the "future cap bank'' for this particular player.

Meanwhile, though, it is only natural for a team in the "Super Bowl bubble" like Dallas to be linked with Hopkins, and ESPN's Jeremy Fowler - who we say with respect is quite adept at throwing ideas against the wall to see if they stick - thinks the move could benefit the Cowboys.

'This is already an elite playoff team," Fowler said on ESPN's GetUp. "This would be a spicy missing piece for Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy. It just makes a lot of sense because CeeDee Lamb is clearly their No. 1 option; Dak Prescott needs a little more. You got Brandin Cooks as that vertical threat. ... It just fits perfectly for an offense that would need it.''

Now, we know there is no such thing as "perfect" in the NFL, and among the many things Fowler skims over in his take is Gallup. A year removed from his ACL injury, is it fair to just push a player out who, when healthy, showed his ability to be a 1,000-yard receiver for the Cowboys? There are moves being made to get Gallup more involved the offense ... maybe another sign that Dallas view D-Hop as being an unnecessary luxury.

Fowler mentions that Hopkins will help with Prescott's turnovers. But what about Cooks, Gallup and getting the plays that Dak likes and removing the ones he doesn't in the playbook? All of that would help limit Dak's turnovers as well.

Let us say it again: It seems like Hopkins coming to Dallas - in the minds of the powers that be - would be a luxury signing for coach Mike McCarthy and his offense. "Spicy''? Yes. The "missing piece"? That's a subject worthy of debate.
