Cowboys Want to Draft 'Their Kelce'; How Oregon State TE Luke Musgrave Fits

In this story:
The Dallas Cowboys have two young rookie tight ends Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot ready to take over from the departed Dalton Schultz who is now a Houston Texan.
But rumors (and CowboysSI.com intel) have been gathering pace for the best part of a month that Dallas will look to target a tight end in the first round of the upcoming draft. Michael Mayer, Dalton Kincaid, Darnell Washington, and Sam LaPorta have been linked with Dallas.
But in Daniel Jeremiah's final mock draft for NFL.com, he has the Cowboys selecting a tight end, albeit one that's a bit left-field - Oregon State's Luke Musgrave.
"Dallas still has talent at tight end even after losing Dalton Schultz in free agency, but Musgrave gives them some major playmaking ability," Jeremiah writes.
The playmaking ability that Jeremiah is talking about doesn't show up on Musgrave's college stat sheet, largely due to a knee injury last year as in his 20 games in during his college career, he registered just 633 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Despite that, Musgrave's 4.61 40-yard dash shows his athleticism, as he can quickly get vertical down the seam. Scouts praise his run blocking effort, which could please head coach Mike McCarthy as he looks to make running the football more of a primary focus of his West Coast Offense.
And what is Dallas looking for at this position again? As an NFL source tells CowboysSI.com, the Cowboys are looking for "their Kelce.'' Maybe Musgrave is some of that.
Some see Musgrave as a developmental tight end, and when compared to others in Mayer, Washington, and Kincaid who could in theory help Dallas "now," all three could be off the board when the Cowboys selection at No.26 comes up.
The shortened season in 2020 and his knee injury in 2022 make Musgrave an intriguing prospect in the first round for the Cowboys.
Many have Dallas taking Mayer or Kincaid, but if his injury isn't a concern (he has been given full medical clearance), then Musgrave at No. 26 would be a good selection for the Cowboys.
