The Dallas Cowboys are, for many, right in the conversation for teams who can win the Super Bowl. With a roster that has supreme talent on both sides of the ball, there aren't many question marks surrounding the Dallas roster ... except one - the kicker position.

After Brett Maher had a good regular season that saw his comeback story come full-circle, he fluffed his lines when the lights were at their brightest and, as such, is no longer a member of the Cowboys.

Tristan Vizcaino is the only kicker on the Cowboys roster, and many think he isn't the answer, especially when a) Dallas has made it clear another signing is on the horizon and b) several notable free agent kickers are available ... like former Green Bay Packer Mason Crosby.

The veteran has been keeping himself in shape as he entered free agency for the first time in his 16-year career.

"I'm getting myself ready for training camp and feeling good," Crosby said via Forbes.com. "I'm excited for what this next opportunity holds, and we'll see what happens.

"It's been unreal that this is the first time in 16 years that I've been a free agent. Been so fortunate and really thankful that through all these years, I've been able to get a deal done with the Packers before I ever tested the market. So, it's a little bit unknown."

Many have wondered why the Cowboys have sat on their hands regarding the kicker situation. Our own Mike Fisher has previously stated, per a source, that there is a plan inside The Star ... but that plan has yet to reveal itself.

With other veteran kickers in Robbie Gould and Ryan Succup also out in the free agency wilderness (not to mention any minor-league guys), Crosby has competition. We do know that that level of kicker means a $3 to $4 million APY salary - three or four times what Dallas usually pays. But Crosby, having been one of the better kickers in the NFL over the last decade, believes his resume speaks for itself.

"I've done it for a long time. I'm a known entity," said Crosby, 38. "Teams would probably just want to see that I'm ready to go, and I have a little bit left in me."

Dallas coach Mike McCarthy and Crosby are known to each other, having spent almost a decade-and-a-half together in Green Bay. Could that be the lure in a potential deal? A "known entity''? A "McCarthy guy''? A "plan in place''? And Mason Crosby is a native of Texas? We'll soon see if it all fits.
