Taco Talk: Cowboys ex Charlton gets sack of Dak, is hopeful for future

ARLINGTON - The movies tell us, "There's no crying in baseball,'' and the sports slogan is all wrong. Better is, "There's no bragging in losing.'' Taco Charlton, the Dallas Cowboys ex, knows this. Some of his new teammates, 31-6 losers here on Sunday, do not.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took a colorful dig at Charlton on Friday after Dallas' release of former first-round pick Charlton, who'd been signed off waivers by winless Miami. During his radio show on 105.3 The Fan, Jerry said Charlton “just wilted.”

Sunday's game, with pass-rusher Charlton getting his wish to play against his old mates, marked the beginning of a chance to bloom again. And indeed, even in a 31-6 loss, Taco made an impact, as Charlton had two tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack against the Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

“I told Taco, 'Good luck on everything,” Prescott said. “I didn’t tell him congrats on that sack. I could have thrown it away.”

Ah yes, but we all make mistakes. Even the offensive pilot of Dallas' 3-0 start does, as Dak will readily admit. And Dallas made a mistake on Taco. And Taco made his mistakes, too.

“On the field, if you go three years down the line, we will get to see who is right and who is wrong,” Charlton said after the Dolphins’ loss. “It is on me now. I get to play football, and then I get to get down to what I do.”

This is Charlton taking his medicine. He did get some chances --Dallas made him the 28th overall choice in 2017 for a reason. But the chances dried up. He starts anew. Maybe he'll get some sacks to go along wit the lumps he will take playing for a bad team.

As Dallas puts the 0-3 Dolphins behind it, a note about winning and losing and how to handle both is merited. Taco in Dallas was in need of an attitude adjustment; maybe a chance of scenery is helping him get that. And maybe he can do the same for new teammates who don't quite grasp the concept.

Immediately after the game, somebody named "Davon Godchaux'' took to Twitter to announce his arrival as a defensive tackle who is better at his job than Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick is at his. As evidence, Davon offered this video clip, showing him surviving a single battle against Frederick ... with no indication that he won on any of Dallas' 66 other plays.

And the laugh is on the Dolphins, a team with no muscle trying to flex ... maybe needing the foibles of Taco Charlton to teach them the humility that is appropriate with 0-3.
