FRISCO - Jerry Jones said it about as succinctly as he is capable of doing in calling newly-signed Ezekiel Elliott a 'milestone player and person.' But the Dallas Cowboys owner also used Thursday's Zeke contract press conference to tell some drunken tales.

Elliott signed his largest-running-back-deal-in-NFL history contract just in time to join practice here inside The Star for preparation for Sunday's Week 1 game against the visiting Giants.

‘This is a milestone contract, but more importantly, it’s with a milestone person and player,'' Jones said.

And then came the jokes.

Jubilant Jerry at one point paraphrased former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington's "That's the way baseball go.'' He made some kooky comments about Zeke's loved ones, who were here to witness the event.

And then he told a Drunk Jerry story, recalling a time when he was in New York (as he was this week) during the signing of another Cowboys rushing champ.

Jerry said he was in the Big Apple and in the midst of Emmitt Smith negotiations that happened to not be going well when, in the wee hours of the morning he trudged to the hotel bar and enjoyed way too much to drink. Upon wobbling to his room after 2 a.m., he noticed the phone message light flashing red.

Finally, son Stephen Jones reached Dad to inform him of the good news: Emmitt had agreed to a contact.

And then, Stephen injected during this presser, with perfect comedic timing, "And then (Jerry) went out to celebrate!''

Jerry even owned the presser by owning a meme. His "Zeke Who?'' comment during negotiations could've become a joke on the Cowboys. Instead? They can now profit off the joke.

"I think it’s pretty funny,’ Elliott himself said of the 'Zeke Who?' T-shirt. "I was thinking about doing the same thing!’

But now he's free to think mostly about football -- and about a charitable effort, as he'll donate $100,000 to a favorite Jones family charity, the Salvation Army.

And of course, Jones couldn't help himself.

"When Zeke sticks it in the bucket,'' Jubilant Jerry said with a wink, "a lot of good things happen.''
