Why's Cowboys Ex Coach Garrett A Giants Keeper?

The New York Giants coaching staff, sources have indicated to us, was assembled by both 2020 first-year head coach Joe Judge and by an ownership group that specifically supported the idea of bringing in the freshly-dismissed Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator.

Now comes word from New York that Garrett is expected to return, with some reacting that his retention "is not a surprise.''

We suppose that is so. But that doesn't mean that it was always smooth sailing for Garrett, 54, who recently interviewed with the Los Angeles Chargers for their head coaching vacancy - an inexplicable piece of news to many given that it does not seem logical that after being dismissed by Dallas and then overseeing a bad New York offense, Garrett's stock would somehow be on the rise.

There are those inside the Giants building, we're told, who would've been quite comfortable with Garrett getting the Chargers job instead of the many they hired, Brandon Staley; Judge would have simply moved assistant Freddie Kitchens, his long-time pal, up the chain to coordinator.

We won't argue against Garrett's merits; this corner has actually been criticized often for being too supportive of what "RedBall'' built in Dallas, as during his nine seasons as the head coach of the Cowboys he went 85-67 in the regular season. (But never over the hump in the postseason.). We do have to point out, though, in fairness and in fact, that he got the Chargers interview because the Spanos family respected all the recommendations that came in from Garrett supporters (say, Jimmy Johnson and Norv Turner, for instance).

And we do have to point out that in New York, the security of Garrett isn't a "surprise'' only once you are aware that ownership - more than Judge - holds Garrett in very high regard.and 2-3 in three postseason trips. The Cowboys didn’t renew his contract after the 2019 season, and Joe Judge hired Garrett as his offensive coordinator.

Garrett's offense last year was the second-worst in football, and most critics did not see great development from young QB Daniel Jones. Garrett will get a 2021 chance to fix all of that ... for a number of behind-the-scenes reasons.
