Mike Pouncey said he had waited for this day for the past two years, the day when he officially could retire as a member of the Miami Dolphins.

His wish came true when the organization signed him to a one-day contract, something they had last done in 2018.

"The Dolphins just meant so much to me and my family," Pouncey said at a press conference Thursday morning. "Happy to be back. I know it's two years past retirement, but to be able to say I'm retired as a Miami Dolphin is one of the greatest achievements of my life.

"It means the world. Like I always said, I was gonna be a Dolphin for life and I meant it. Now waiting for two years to be able to come up here and retire a Dolphin and to finally say I'm retired a Miami Dolphin is just awesome."

Pouncey played for the Dolphins from 2011 until he was released in 2018 after a contract dispute and then spent two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers before officially retiring in February 2021.

"I was keeping in touch with them a bunch over the years, even when I was playing with the Chargers," Pouncey said. "I still had a bunch of friends that worked here. I still knew all the ownership and a lot of scouts and stuff. So the relationship has always been there. Since I've been retired. I've done different events, like we did the cycling challenge me and my brother did one year. But we stayed involved.

"Now that I'm back here, whatever volume they want me around, I'll be around. I came down for a couple of weeks during the season, whenever Coach (Brian) Flores was here and help with the offensive line. I'm here, I'm retired, me and my brother, we just handle a liquor company now called JF Hayden's, and other than that, my phone is always open for the Dolphins."

Pouncey looked very different from his playing days, explaining he's down to 220 pounds from his playing weight of around 300.

"Man, I feel I feel awesome," Pouncey said. "Me and my brother, we retired at the same time. And a lot of times whenever you get so used to being in a routine, we just challenged ourselves as I are, let's drop this weight and see how fast we can do it. And I've had him by my side throughout my career, and even post-career, he makes it easy, but the process for us was just, man, just stop eating like linemen. We stopped eating all the carbs. And we stopped eating six, seven times a day. And, honestly, everyone is like they asked all the time, like, how do you guys eat? I say like rabbits. Well, back when he were playing we ate like pigs. I mean, that's the only difference I can explain."
