While there was more focus given to the likes of Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Drake and SZA, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts also took home an honor at Sunday evening's BET Awards, being named the Sportsman of the Year:

When you consider that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James and New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge were also nominated, that should give you an idea of how difficult is was to come out victorious. LSU basketball star Angel Reese was voted the Sportswoman of the Year.

Hurts took a major step forward in his third NFL season, tossing 22 touchdowns to six interceptions, while also rushing for 13 touchdowns. Hurts -- in part because he missed two games with a right shoulder injury -- finished runner-up to the aforementioned Mahomes in NFL MVP voting.

Of course, Hurts and the Eagles also finished runner-up to Mahomes and the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, losing 38-35. But even with a costly second-quarter fumble, Hurts was largely excellent in the game, throwing for 304 yards and a touchdown, and scampering for three scores as well.

Hurts was rewarded with a new contract this offseason before the final year of his rookie deal. The former second-round pick inked a five-year, $255 million extension with the Eagles, a pact that will guarantee him more than $179 million.

Last year's Second-Team All-Pro quarterback recently checked in at No. 5 on our countdown of the top players at his position entering the 2023 season, a reminder of the seismic jump that Hurts has made so far in his NFL career.
