Giants Slip in Latest MMQB Power Rankings

After a disappointing loss to the Saints, the Giants are back to reality.

The New York Giants fell back to earth after sustaining a 24-6 loss to the New Orleans Saints, which all but ended their already slim playoff hopes. And with that loss, the Giants predictably fell one spot, from 24 to 25, in the latest MMQB power rankings poll.

MMQB's Conor Orr tried to inject a little humor into backing this week's Giants tumble, noting, “This was the only way for the Tommy DeVito saga to reach its conclusion: with a pizza-related feud and potential backroom price gouging, all covered by the local New Jersey papers.”

Aside from the fact that DeVito pulled off a semi-costly business decision in which his agent allegedly doubled the quarterback's appearance fee after reaching a preliminary (but non-contractual) agreement with a local pizzeria/bakery, the real trouble for the Giants has been on the field.

DeVito completed 58.8 percent of his 34 pass attempts for 177 yards and no touchdowns. While he didn't cause any turnovers and remained poised in the pocket despite having to deal with an offensive line that did not bring its A-game, he also couldn't move the offense the way he had in the three-game winning streak, as the defense didn't produce any short fields for him as it had over the streak.

DeVito was also working without a run game that couldn't muster more than 60 yards, more than half of those gained by DeVito himself.

With the Saints loss in the books, DeVito and the Giants will head to Philadelphia for a Christmas Day matchup against the suddenly reeling Philadelphia Eagles, losers of three in a row, including a 20-17 loss to the Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

If there’s a game that will define the state and resilience level of DeVito and the Giants, it’s their Week 16 showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, who just so happen to be very hungry for a win after losing three straight games (but who are 5-1 at home this season).

With three games left, the Giants, who sit in 25th on the MMQB power rankings this week, are still ahead of the Jets, Titans, Chargers, Commanders, Cardinals, Patriots, and Panthers. But the 10-4 Eagles, who Orr ranked sixth despite their slide, are still pushing for the number one spot in the NFC, which would grant them a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
