Strengths

  • Elite frame and size for the position
  • Size/Speed combination - gigantic hands
  • Sufficient change of direction and agility
  • Good athlete with excellent acceleration
  • Once committed on the vertical plane, his build-up speed is impressive
  • Quick and active feet assist his release package
  • Good overall ability to release against press via skill and physicality
  • Quick on curl/comeback routes - no wasted steps
  • Comes back to the football and presents his hands
  • Release package, plus size, allowed him to win quick slants when he was tasked to run them
  • Displayed solid nuanced movements within his limited route tree
  • Deceptive running routes - good mental processing
  • Excellent overall play strength - not easy to bring down
  • Runs through contact and physical DBs
  • Understood how to uncover against zone
    • Miss St: Q1, 7:16, 3rd & 8
    • Vanderbilt: Q3, 6:40, 1st & 10
    • Arkansas: Q3, 7:40, 1st & 10
  • Vertical separation ability was displayed vs. Vanderbilt (2022)
  • Versatility and success that can be used at all three levels of the field
  • Very good and physical blocker

Weaknesses

  • Modest explosiveness off the LOS
  • Creating separation at the LOS against patient CBs in press
  • Had a restricted route tree, albeit the nuance with the routes he ran suggests he’ll develop as a route runner
  • Is solid as a contested-catch player, but I do wish he was a bit more physical and secure in that area
  • Takes him time to accelerate and build up speed
  • Production: had one season with more than 25 catches
    • One season with more than 379 yards

Summary

There aren’t many big-bodied receivers in this draft class, but Jonathan Mingo is one of them. He’s a strong physical WR with excellent build-up speed and a good release package.

He did not run a diverse route tree but showed nuance in his micromovements that assisted him in creating separation at all three levels of the field. His combination of size and speed will be coveted in this draft class. If the Giants forgo selecting a WR in round one, Mingo makes for an excellent and versatile option in round two.
