Giants Fall to Jets 32-24 in Preseason Finale

The preseason now in the books, the Giants will begin to shape their initial 53-man roster.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants fell to the New York Jets, 32-24. The Giants will finish the preseason at 1-2.

The Giants fell behind 14-0 before scoring 13 unanswered points to finish the first half. After an uneventful third quarter in which the two teams swapped field goals, the Jets put the game out of reach with two touchdown passes by backup quarterback Tim Boyle.

As advertised, the Jets began the game with their starters, which included quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ debut in a Jets uniform. The Giants, however, stuck to using most of their backups on offense and defense.

As he has done all summer, quarterback Tommy DeVito saw most snaps under center. After replacing Tyrod Taylor on the third drive of the game, DeVito completed 19 of 29 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown, with one interception.

The game's first three drives ended in punts, but the Jets eventually struck first by moving 52 yards in four plays. With great field position at their own 48, the big play was a 22-yard pass interference penalty by Giants cornerback Amani Oruwariye on 3rd-and-4.

Rodgers followed with a 10-yard completion to Mecole Hardman and then fired a dart to Garrett Wilson in the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

DeVito then led a promising drive to the Jets 38. However, a poor throw by DeVito and a poor route by receiver David Sills resulted in Jets cornerback Brandin Echols making a diving interception for a 67-yard Pick-6 to extend the Jets’ lead to 14-0.

After both teams punted, DeVito led the Giants 81 yards in 14 plays. The offense converted four third downs while DeVito completed five of eight passes for 58 yards, with 23 coming on a dart to Sills. Running back Jashaun Corbin then put the Giants on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the Jets’ lead in half.

The Giants’ defense forced the Jets to punt, and the offense moved the ball to the Jets' 39-yardline. Facing 3rd and 9, Sills appeared to make a 20-yard juggling grab, but a Jets challenge overturned the call to an incomplete pass. Nonetheless, the Giants sent out Graham Gano for a 57-yard field goal attempt, which he converted to make it 14-10 Jets.

After forcing another punt, the Giants put together another productive drive to end the first half. DeVito completed four passes for 24 yards and rushed twice for 13 to move the ball to the Jets 22. Although Sills could not haul in a deep pass to the endzone, Gano still finished the drive with a 40-yard field goal, as the Giants entered halftime down by one.

Both teams kicked field goals on their first drives of the second half. The Giants’ defense then forced a crucial punt, giving them a chance to take the lead; however, with the ball already at their own 10-yard line, they lost six yards in three plays before punting the ball away.

The Jets would completely dominate the fourth quarter. After switching Wilson for Boyle under center, their offense immediately marched 64 yards in 10 plays.

Boyle completed a 16-yard pass to Xavier Gipson and a 14-yarder to Alex Erickson and eventually finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Erickson. A successful two-point conversion pass to Jason Brownlee followed, and the Jets extended their lead to two possessions, now ahead 25-16.

After another three-and-out by the Giants, the Jets put the game away with an 8-play, 66-yard touchdown drive. The key play was a 30-yard reception by Irvin Charles, and Boyle threw another touchdown pass to Erickson to finish the drive, this one from 14 yards.

Although the game was effectively decided, DeVito would end the Giants’ preseason on a promising note by leading the offense downfield in six plays. After the two-minute warning, DeVito accounted for 61 yards; he ripped off a 13-yard run before completing an 18-yard pass to Eric Gray and a 30-yard touchdown strike to Sills, which concluded the scoring.

BLUE NOTES

Receiver Collin Johnson debuted in this game in the third quarter, perhaps due to Bryce Ford-Wheaton's knee injury cutting into his anticipated reps.

Defensive lineman D.J. Davidson, who came off the PUP list last week, was not spotted taking any snaps in this game.

The Giants had additional injuries pop up in the second half of the game. Cornerback Gemon Green was ruled out with a shoulder injury and defensive back Gervarrius Owens was declared out with a hamstring injury.
