As Dwayne Haskins Lands on the Bench, the Giants Remain Committed to Daniel Jones

Both Dwayne Haskins and Daniel Jones have struggled so far this year for their respective teams. But whereas Washington has decided to make a change at quarterback after four games, the Giants are planning, as of now, to show more patience with Jones.

The Giants might be frustrated over having lost their first four games, but they aren't about to do something drastic.

You know, like making a quarterback change.

That’s exactly what the Washington Football Team has reportedly done. According to the NFL Network, the WFT is pulling the plug on Dwayne Haskins, last year’s first-round draft pick, as the starting quarterback.

If that's not enough of a shakeup, WFT Maven Chris Russell reports that Haskins could drop to third-string o the WFT depth chart.

In trying to make sense of the move, Russell wrote that there were likely several factors involved in the decision, including the fact that Haskins is not head coach Ron Rivera's draft pick.

While teams tend to copy from one another, don't expect the Giants, who have their own struggles with Daniel Jones at the helm, to follow suit for the time being, as even though Jones is not the pick of head coach Joe Judge, that doesn't mean Judge has become disenchanted by Jones's struggles through the first quarter of the season.

“Daniel is our quarterback. That’s who we’re playing with,” Judge said Monday. “We support him, we have a lot of confidence in him, we have faith in him. Again, he’s a young guy who’s developing. We’ve seen a lot of progress from him day to day.”

Jones has been working behind an inconsistent offensive line. He’s also been missing running back Saquon Barkley, a guy opposing defenses had to account for, and receiver Sterling Shepard, an under-the-radar yet very important missing player.

Still, Jones hasn't been strictly a victim of his circumstances. Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky notes in the video below that there are things that Jones still struggles with from his rookie season, most notably the mental processing part of the game.

Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, whose system helped turned Tony Romo and fourth-round draft pick Dak Prescott into Pro Bowl quarterbacks, hasn’t been able to get Jones on an upward trend after four weeks. 

To be fair, though, the Cowboys had a much better offensive line, a solid running game, and a No. 1 receiver that both Romo and Prescott could lean on. That is likely why Judge and the Giants will likely show patience with Jones. 

To their credit, the coaching staff has been proactive in attempts to fix the team's weaknesses--take a look at the defense, which has made gradual improvements over the last few weeks.

“Are there things (Jones) needs to correct and clean up, and can we do a better job as coaches and staff to put him in the right situations? Absolutely. … But Daniel is our quarterback,” Judge said.
