John Harbaugh Likes Giants’ “Three-headed Monster"

When New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh assembled his assistant coaching staff, his one goal was simple: to build the best staff possible.

So it was no surprise that Harbaugh’s staff consisted of assistants with prior NFL experience.

And of particular note, on the offensive side of the ball where Harbaugh will take over the task of helping quarterback Jaxson Dart elevate his game, he has brought in three guys who are already settled into the lab developing a new system.

The trio includes offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Brian Callahan, and senior offensive assistant Greg Roman. Between them, they bring a wealth of experience to form a three-headed monster just waiting to unleash their craftiness on unsuspecting defenses.

“Three-headed monster–I like that,” Harbaugh said with a smile during Tuesday’s media session at the NFL combine.

“I'm excited about the staff. I think those three guys you're talking about are like high-level guys. These are proven coaches.”

They’re also coaches who have been with successful offenses at one point or another in their NFL coaching careers.

Roman, once Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator in Baltimore, most recently held the same role for the Chargers. In 2019, Roman, then the Ravens offensive coordinator, was voted as the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year.

Nagy, once the Chicago Bears head coach where he won the AP NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2018, was previously with Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championships .

And Callahan, despite a failed tenure as their head coach in Tennessee, had success as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, with whom he won a Super Bowl.

The three men have been tasked by Harbaugh with leading the creation of a system unique to the Giants' personnel that optimizes the talent on the roster.

“I told 'em, we're not trying to carry over a system from Kansas City or from Tennessee or Cincinnati or San Francisco or Baltimore,” Harbaugh said.

“We're building the New York Giants systems and the same thing on offense. We're gonna build a system that fits what we're trying to accomplish, terminology-wise, concept-wise.”

Although Harbaugh’s “three-headed monster” is still in its early stages of working together, the early returns have the 63-year-old head coach pleased with what he’s seen.

“I really like the guys who are doing the building, you know, the three monsters that are, that are leading that up and all the other coaches too,” he said.

“I'm thrilled to have those guys. You try to build the best staff you can because you gotta be your best.”
