Giants 2023 Draft Deemed Best Value by Popular Analytics Site

How good was the New York Giants' 2023 draft? Really good in terms of value, according to one analytics site. Here's why.

Every year, there’s a discussion surrounding the NFL Draft of “should teams draft for need or value (best player available?” Ideally, the team gets to draft the best player available, so it happens to be in a position of need.

According to Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis, the New York Giants' draft value was the top in the league.

The best value for the Giants? Oregon defensive lineman Jordon Riley. Riley’s expected pick, according to mock drafts, was at No. 83, but the Giants drafted him with pick No. 243 to give him a -160 value (in Sharp's initial chart, a negative number is a good thing.

The Giants also found negative (good) value in a major way with Tre Hawkins III, who was expected to be drafted with the 117th pick but got picked at No. 209. Day 3 picks that I wasn’t a huge fan of were fantastic value by DCOE (Draft Capital Over Expectation), meaning I was lower than the consensus on these players.

If there’s anything to take from this exercise, it’s that the Giants will continue their approach of drafting best player available at positions of need, resulting in strong draft classes.

On Days 1 and 2, the Giants had a total value of -54, with the selections of Deonte Banks (-5), John Michael Schmitz (-18), and Jalin Hyatt (-31). Schmitz was also ranked as the fifth-best value in the second round, behind only Brian Branch, Joey Porter Jr, O’Cyrus Torrence, and Michael Mayer, who were all expected to go in the first round.

Based on DCOE, the selections of Jalin Hyatt in the third round and Eric Gray in the fifth round were the same value. With the value of minus-31, the Giants got both Hyatt and Gray almost a full round after their expectation.
