WFAN Radio Host Has This Worry About Giants Potential First-round Draft Pick

Gregg Giannotti doesn't want to see the Giants draft this quarterback prospect. Here's why.

Although they still have a quarterback they’ve invested heavily in, with Daniel Jones, many believe the New York Giants are considering drafting Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with their first-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft if he is available.

But not everyone would like to see the Giants go in that direction. Gregg Giannotti, co-host of WFAN Radio's "Boomer and Gio" morning show, says he hopes McCarthy is off the draft board before the Giants can select him sixth overall because if they choose McCarthy and he doesn’t pan out for the team, it could set the organization back years.

“It feels like the Giants could have a semi-repeat of what happened with Daniel Jones," Gionnatti said. A guy similar to Eli Manning and Daniel Jones has that personality, and he is now the next one to set them back. Eli Manning didn’t, of course, but Daniel Jones did.”

Gionnatti isn’t buying into the hype surrounding McCarthy, seemingly coming out of nowhere. He points out that McCarthy wasn’t even slated to be a first-round pick by many of the same experts who now have him as one of the draft’s top five or ten picks.

“On January 21st, Daniel Jeremiah, who is a well-respected draft guy, doesn’t even have J.J. McCarthy going in the first round at all,” Gionnatti pointed out.

And that fact has Gionnatti confused why McCarthy has risen so quickly up draft boards.
“Nobody was talking about this guy being a top-five pick until Jim Harbaugh and the Combine,” Gionnatti said. “And all of a sudden, he’s a top-five pick.”

The truth is that any quarterback the Giants may select could set them back for years if he turns out to be the wrong choice. That's why the Giants are doing due diligence in scheduling private workouts—they'll meet with McCarthy on Easter Sunday—and visits to get to know the prospects as thoroughly as possible.
