The New York Giants have reportedly agreed to terms with veteran center J.C. Hassenauer on a one-year contract.

Hassenauer, 6-foot-2 and 295 pounds, played his college football at Alabama, where, at one point, his offensive coordinator was current Giants head coach Brian Daboll. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons after the 2018 draft but ended up on Atlanta's practice squad for his first NFL season.

Following the 2018 NFL season, Hassenauer had a brief stint with the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football. He signed with the Steelers the following year but was waived after training camp. Pittsburgh then signed him to the practice squad on November 20 of that year and then promoted him to the active roster on December 24.

In 2020, Hassenauer made his first NFL start. He would go on to appear in 45 games with seven starts. Per Pro Football Focus, Hassenauer has played 545 regular-season snaps at center and 147 at left guard and has allowed 12 total pressures, none of which were sacks, over his NFL career.

He suffered a season-ending torn pectoral in November 2021, finishing that season on injured reserve.

The Giants have a glaring need at center after losing starter Jon Feliciano and backup Nick Gates in free agency. General manager Joe Schoen mentioned that the team had some players they would consider for the position, such as Ben Bredenson, Jack Anderson, and Shane Lemieux. Of those, only Bredenson (30 snaps) has significant experience at the position.

The Giants are widely expected to draft a center this month at some point. Schoen also told reporters at the league meetings last week that the team would keep watching for any training camp cuts to address the position.
