Giants Sign TE Tommy Sweeney, CB Amani Oruwariye to 1-Year Deals

In this story:
The New York Giants added another pair of free agents to their roster, including former Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney and former Lions defensive back Amani Oruwariye, who were signed to one-year deals.
Sweeney, from Ramsey, New Jersey, was initially drafted by the Bills in the seventh round of the 2019 draft. The 6-foot-5, 251-pound Sweeney has primarily been a blocking tight end in his career. He has appeared in 24 games, with four starts, and has caught 18 out of 26 pass targets for 165 yards and one touchdown.
Sweeney joins Daniel Bellinger, Darren Waller, Lawerence Cager, and Chris Myarick in the Giants tight ends room. Bellinger and Waller are the likely pass catchers of the group, while Myarick, Sweeney, and Cager will likely have to carve out their roster spots by blocking and with their special teams play.

Oruwariye, 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds was a 2019 fifth-round draft pick by the Lions. He's played in 53 games with 36 starts, most of those starts coming in 2020 and 2021. He posted his best season in 2021 when he picked off six passes and broke up 11.

Oruwariye, who lacks elite speed, saw his role in the Lions defense reduced last season, where he took just 50 percent of the snaps. Oruwariye, who played his college ball at Penn State, is primarily a perimeter cornerback with good length and measurables and experience playing press-man or zone coverage.
His length also allows him to challenge receivers on contested catches. During his two seasons as a full-time starter, he allowed less than 60 percent of the pass targets against him to be completed.
