With the 2023 NFL Draft rapidly approaching the Jacksonville Jaguars have expressed interest in a multitude of different prospects, with former Syracuse offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron being the latest addition to a growing list.

Represented by offensive line coach Phil Rauscher, the Jacksonville Jaguars made their way to Syracuse University to see the 6-foot-five 323-pound Canada native up close, but they were far from the only attendees. According to Brent Axe of Syracuse.com, 31 teams were in attendance, with several other offensive line coaches in attendance.

Looking at Bergeron’s numbers it is easy to see why so many teams have shown interest. In 2022, Bergeron allowed just four sacks and was penalized only three times in 686 snaps over 11 games. For his collegiate career Bergeron started 39 games, was a two-time All-ACC selection, and even showcased some versatility in January’s Senior Bowl, taking snaps at guard.

NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein compared Bergeron to Pro Bowler Joel Bitonio, citing his excellent run-blocking ability and solid technique as reasons why he could see success at the NFL level.

“A college tackle who could be best playing inside at guard, Bergeron is evenly proportioned and wears his weight well on a compact frame,” Zierlein wrote in Bergeron’s draft profile.

“He’s a dynamic run blocker, able to excel in all three phases (positioning, sustain and finish). He’s just as capable of climbing and tagging second-level linebackers as he is at opening run lanes at the point of attack with leg drive. He’s athletic enough to play tackle, but inconsistent anchor and hand placement could cause concern for evaluators. While his protection issues are potentially correctable, Bergeron’s scheme-versatile, Pro Bowl-caliber run-blocking potential might hasten a team’s decision to move him inside.”

Up to this point, mock drafts for the Jaguars have been mixed, with offensive tackle, cornerback, safety, and tight end all being potential options at the 24th pick.

With Bergeron’s projected draft status to be in the late first to the second round, Jacksonville may not be able to wait until their second-round pick (55th overall) for Bergeron to fall, making the decision at No. 24 even more open for discussion.

It’s a situation worth keeping an eye on as the draft inches closer.
