While watching a game live can give you one impression of a player's usage, looking at the actual amount of snaps they played compared to their teammates can also give insight into the team's strategy and outlook.

When looking at the snap counts for the Jacksonville Jaguars after their 37-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, it is clear to see what kind of plan the Jaguars went into the game with, and what limitations they had from a personnel standpoint.

Who played a lot, and why? Did the snaps mean anything or nothing? We examine below:

Offense (84 snaps)

OG Andrew Norwell: 84

C Brandon Linder: 84

OT Jawaan Taylor: 84

OT Cam Robinson: 84

QB Gardner Minshew: 84

RB Leonard Fournette: 77

WR DJ Chark: 68

WR Chris Conley: 65

WR Dede Westbrook: 58

OG Will Richardson: 45

TE Geoff Swaim: 43

OG A.J. Cann: 39

TE James O'Shaughnessy: 38

TE Seth DeValve: 22

WR Marqise Lee: 19

OT Cedric Ogbuehi: 14

WR Keelan Cole: 10

RB Ryquell Armstead: 6

  • This was the first game this season where DJ Chark led the Jaguars wideouts in snaps and it makes sense that Jacksonville is starting to treat him like their No. 1 wideout, because he simply is. He had his way with the Panthers defense, leading to an eight catch for 164 yards and two touchdown performance, the best game of his career. As long as he continues to produce, he should continue to stay on the field as much as possible.
  • This was the also the first game this season where Will Richardson played more than A.J. Cann at right guard, though we now only have a three game sample size. It seems more and more like Richardson is gaining the upperhand in the right guard battle after back-to-back strong performances inside.
  • A week after Ryquell Armstead played 14 snaps and had 9 offensive touches, he played only six snaps and touched the ball twice. The Jaguars were playing catchup for most of the game so this isn't too surprising, but Armstead's usage is still inconsistent thus far.

Defense (65 snaps)

FS Jarrod Wilson: 65

LB Myles Jack: 65

CB A.J. Bouye: 65

CB Tre Herndon: 64

DE Yannick Ngakoue: 58

DE Calais Campbell: 57

DE Josh Allen: 53

SS Ronnie Harrison: 53

CB D.J. Hayden: 52

LB Quincy Williams: 48

DT Marcell Dareus: 37

DT Abry Jones: 32

LB Najee Goode: 17

DE Dawuane Smoot: 16

LB Leon Jacobs: 13

SS Andrew Wingard: 12

DT Taven Bryan: 7

  • Quincy Williams saw a decrease in percentage of snaps played because he was pulled off of the field during the second half and replaced by Najee Goode. Head coach Doug Marrone said they did this because Williams was having a bad day in terms of run fits, and he is right. A change needed to be made. This could be something to watch moving forward.
  • Despite the Jaguars being gashed up front all game, Taven Bryan played only eight snaps. The front seven simply was not getting it done and they should have tried to do more things to switch it up instead of having Bryan sit on the bench and continue to watch the rest of the defense get gashed by the run.
